Death also provides you further emotional growth when you grieve, long for the deceased, and then find comfort as you think, talk, and remember—which fosters a deep love that intertwines the past and present—keeping love alive and renewing your spirit. It is also the reality that you will face death, which affords an opportunity to leave your legacy.
You will notice phrases that reflect how faith constitutes an important stage in growth. And you may discover it matters not so much whether you believe in a higher power. Rather, it matters more that you understand we are all human, feel the same emotions, and most likely respond in similar actions. Yet faith serves to give strength when there is pain and reduces the fear of death, and for some, provides hope. These messages are intended to reflect how faith can also come in the form of belief in yourself and your ability to manifest events that affect your life.
You will read in many poems selected for this volume where I was inspired to write of family, because of the struggles in dealing with my father’s precarious ill health and growing up poor. Through my writing, I was able in hindsight to see my mother’s unfailing challenge to feed, clothe and nurture us during the many years my father was unemployed. Many of the poems reflect how my driving motivation became to protect and care for my family…that no sacrifice was too great! Perhaps you, too, will recognize who you are today because of the influences of your family. The message will surface that you don’t need 10 pairs of shoes or a dozen shirts and pants. You can choose to live humbly. Through the poems I share, I’ve discovered not only am I a product of my family and our experiences—I want my writings to pay homage to them.
In reading this collection of poems, my hope is that you will reconnect with the ability to experience happiness and gratitude, and in turn, find motivation, inspired ideas, and a canvas upon which to create a full and rewarding life—painted with unique colors, which define and support an authentic you.
